Virus scanning at the Gateway - But why?
Security experts recommend to not only run virus scanners at the workplace computer, but also at the gateway to the internet
in order to detect and destroy malicious ware.
Why does this additional investment makes sense? Non of the virus scanning vendors can cover the total variety of threats
out there in the same way. Each of them concentrates at different areas and maintains its individual strength, i. e. heuristic
analysis, unpacking of password protected and/or compressed data, speed of providing brand new virus signatures to name just
a few. Squeezing out the best of the situation works that way: Use one vendor for the work places and another one for the
gateway scanning. That sounds quite easy but will finally result in a way better recognition rate than with only one and the
same vendor applied. As a side effect the workplaces will receive less data packets since the infected ones were already sorted
out by the gateway scanner, which surely will increase work place performance. Even in case of typical day by day events like
failed installation, accidental deactivation or missed signature updates of the workplace scanners, the gateway scanner will
prevent from further damage - at least versus threats coming from the outside.
